Lesson Five Reading and Writing

In English we use articles very often. Most singular nouns need to have an article or a pronoun. Pay attention to the articles as you read the following examples of company descriptions and write one of your own. It is important to be able to describe companies in English. You may need to talk about a company in a business meeting or describe your company to someone new. Here are some examples of company descriptions.

Roche is a pharmaceutical company. It has more than 140 subsidiaries worldwide. Its products include drugs, vitamins, etc. Its pharmaceuticals include Rocephin, Xenica, Invirase, Roaccutan/Accutane and Tamiflu. Its OTC (Over The Counter) products include vitamins, Aleve, and Rennie. It owns 58% of the biotech company Genentech.

McGraw-Hill is one of the world's largest producers of textbooks, tests, and related materials. It serves the elementary, secondary, and higher education markets. It is also a leading supplier of financial and business information services. It publishes Business Week magazine as well as a number of industry trade journals (Aviation Week, Engineering News-Record). It also owns four television stations in three states.
